It seems somewhat ironic that
Mitt Romney is beating up on
Mike Huckabee for passing out pardons to "criminals" like candy. Especially when it comes to the topic of
Scooter Libby. Romney, who brags that he has pardoned
no one in Massachusetts (after a mere 272 requests), has
already announced his leaning toward granting Libby a pardon.
Huckabee (who had over 8,000 requests for clemency as governor) has been much more hesitant to express an opinion one way or the other. Recall the
New Hampshire debate?
CNN reported:
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney started out his answer by noting that during his four years as governor, he didn't pardon anybody "because I didn't want to overturn a jury." But, he said a pardon for Libby would be "worth looking at" because the special prosecutor in the case, Patrick Fitzgerald, "clearly abused prosecutorial discretion" by going after Libby when Fitzgerald knew he was not the original source of the leak ... Two other candidates said they would have to review the transcript before deciding whether to issue a pardon to Libby -- former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Rep. Duncan Hunter of California.
Seems like Romney is the pardon fairy, does it not? Looks like Huckabee should brag that he has pardoned no federal criminals, but Romney already has clear plans to do so!
