Woodward. Still on Top (of the 70s)
The article also says Woodward cautioned his audience to be careful about making conclusions.
He cited President Ford’s pardon of President Nixon near the end of the Watergate scandal. For a while, Woodward said, he believed there was a dirty deal that allowed the pardon. But, after reading through documents and memoirs and interviewing Ford, Woodward decided 25 years after the pardon that Ford had done the right thing.
Well, alrighty. It is a shame Woodward is still living in the 1970s. Has he not hear of Marc Rich? But, I guess we can translate the above as something like:
Dear former President Ford, I know you are now in the afterlife, and a great deal has happened which makes it increasingly difficult to seriously label your pardon of Richard Nixon as the "most controversial." But I just wanted to take this chance to apologize for any false accusations that I may have made, publicly or privately, directly or indirectly, implicitly or explicitly regarding any possibility of impropriety with regard to your decision to pardon Mr. Nixon. I was wrong. You also did what was right.Better late than never.
